A Sender ID is the name or number that appears as the sender when your SMS arrives on a recipient's phone. Instead of seeing a random number like "+255700123456", your customers see your brand name such as "SAKURAHOST" or "MYSHOP". This is one of the most important features for building trust and brand recognition in SMS marketing across Tanzania.

What is a Sender ID?

A Sender ID (also called an Alphanumeric Sender ID) is a custom label of up to 11 characters that replaces the phone number in the "From" field of an SMS. When a Tanzanian customer receives an SMS from your business, they immediately see your brand name, making the message instantly recognisable and trustworthy.

Example: Instead of receiving a message from "+255700999888", your customer sees a message from SAKURAHOST. This dramatically increases open rates and trust, especially for transactional messages like OTPs, order confirmations, and appointment reminders.

Types of Sender IDs

Alphanumeric Sender ID

The most common type for businesses. Contains letters, numbers, or a combination (e.g., "SAKURAHOST", "MYSHOP", "ABC123"). Maximum 11 characters. Recipients cannot reply to alphanumeric sender IDs, making them ideal for one-way notifications and broadcasts.

Numeric Sender ID

Uses a dedicated phone number as the sender. Recipients can reply to the message, enabling two-way SMS conversations. Useful for customer service, surveys, and interactive campaigns. Sakura SMS can provision dedicated numbers with the +255 country code.

Short Code

A shortened number (typically 4-6 digits) used for high-volume applications like voting, subscription services, and keyword-based interactions. Short codes require separate registration with TCRA and the relevant mobile network operators. Contact our team if you need a dedicated short code.

TCRA Regulations for Sender IDs in Tanzania

The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) regulates all commercial SMS activities in Tanzania, including Sender ID registration. Key requirements include:

  • All commercial Sender IDs must be registered with the relevant MNOs (Vodacom, Airtel, Tigo/MIC, Halotel, TTCL)
  • The Sender ID must correspond to a legitimate, registered business
  • Businesses must provide a valid TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) and business registration documents
  • Sender IDs must not impersonate other businesses, government entities, or be misleading
  • Registration typically requires approval from each network operator individually
Compliance Warning: Using unregistered or spoofed Sender IDs is a violation of TCRA regulations and can result in your messages being blocked across all networks, fines, and potential legal action. Always register your Sender ID through the proper channels via Sakura SMS.

How to Request a Sender ID via Sakura SMS

Log In and Navigate to Settings
Sign in to your Sakura SMS dashboard and go to Settings > Sender IDs. Click Request New Sender ID.
Choose Your Sender ID Name
Enter your desired Sender ID. It must be 3-11 characters, contain only letters and numbers (no spaces or special characters), and clearly represent your business or brand. Choose carefully as changing it later requires a new registration.
Provide Business Documentation
Upload the following documents:
  • Business Registration Certificate or Certificate of Incorporation
  • TIN Certificate from TRA (Tanzania Revenue Authority)
  • A letter on company letterhead requesting the Sender ID
  • National ID of the authorised signatory
Select Target Networks
Choose which mobile networks you want your Sender ID registered on. We recommend registering on all networks (Vodacom, Airtel, Tigo, Halotel, TTCL) for maximum reach. Each network has its own approval process.
Submit and Wait for Approval
Sakura SMS handles the submission to each MNO on your behalf. Approval timelines vary by network but typically take 3-5 business days. Some networks may take up to 10 business days. You will receive email notifications as each network approves your Sender ID.
Start Using Your Sender ID
Once approved, your Sender ID appears in the dropdown when composing SMS campaigns. Select it and start sending branded messages immediately.

Sender ID Best Practices

Naming Guidelines

  • Keep it short and memorable: "SAKURA" is better than "SAKURAHOST1" if character space is tight
  • Use your brand name: Customers should instantly recognise who the message is from
  • Avoid generic terms: "INFO", "ALERT", or "PROMO" are commonly rejected by networks
  • No misleading names: Do not use names resembling banks, government agencies, or other businesses
  • Test readability: How does the name appear on different phone models? Shorter names display better

When to Use Different Sender Types

  • Alphanumeric Sender ID: Marketing campaigns, transactional alerts, OTP messages, newsletters
  • Numeric (Dedicated Number): Customer service, two-way conversations, surveys, appointment confirmations where replies are needed
  • Short Code: High-volume keyword services, voting, subscription opt-in/out, premium services

Common Sender ID Issues and Solutions

  • Sender ID shows as number instead of name: Your Sender ID may not be approved on that specific network yet. Check approval status in your dashboard or contact support
  • Registration rejected: Usually due to incomplete documentation or a name that conflicts with an existing registration. Revise and resubmit
  • Different display on different phones: Some older handsets may truncate long Sender IDs. Keep names under 8 characters for best compatibility

Managing Multiple Sender IDs

Businesses with multiple brands or departments can register multiple Sender IDs on Sakura SMS. For example, an e-commerce company might use "MYSHOP" for order notifications and "MYSHOPPROMO" for marketing campaigns. Each Sender ID requires separate registration and documentation.
