If your website or email does not work after you connected a domain, start here. This page points you to the right fix for each DNS problem.
Overview
DNS is the phone book of the internet. It tells browsers and mail servers where your website and email live. When DNS is wrong, you see errors like a parked page, a certificate warning, a site that works on www but not on the root domain, or email that does not arrive.
Why it happens
- A DNS record was added in the wrong place, or the nameservers point somewhere different from where you edited the records.
- An old record is still cached, so some devices see the old address.
- Two records conflict, for example a CNAME and an A record for the same name.
What it means
Almost every DNS problem is one of: wrong nameservers, wrong or missing record, a record that has not finished spreading, or a certificate that does not match the name. You can diagnose it in minutes once you know which one it is.
How to fix it
- Find out which nameservers your domain uses: see how to change nameservers. Edit records only where the nameservers point.
- Domain changed but nothing happens: domain not working after a DNS change.
- Works on www but not without it, or the other way round: www works but the root domain does not.
- Parked or default page showing: domain shows a parked page.
- Certificate warning on one name: certificate error on www or the root domain.
- Email stopped after a DNS change: keep email working when your website is elsewhere.
