If your domain has expired, renew it as soon as possible. For a while after expiry the owner can still renew, but the website and email will stop working and the domain can eventually be released for anyone to register.
Overview
A domain is rented, usually for one year at a time. When the term ends without payment, the domain moves through an expiry period before it can be deleted and released.
Why it happens
- The renewal invoice was not paid before the due date.
- The reminder emails went to an old or unchecked address.
- Auto-renewal was not switched on, or the payment method failed.
What it means
While expired, your website and email on that domain may stop working. The longer you wait, the higher the risk that the domain cannot be recovered or that recovery costs more. Fast action is the safest option.
How to fix it
- Open the client area, go to Invoices and pay the renewal invoice for the domain.
- If you cannot find the invoice, open a ticket right away with the domain name.
- After payment, wait up to 10 minutes and check the domain shows Active.
- Check your website and email. If they still fail, see domain not working after a DNS change.
- Turn on auto-renewal and update your contact email: how to renew a domain.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get back a domain that was released?
Once a domain is released, anyone can register it. We cannot take it from a new owner, so renew early.
Will I lose my website content?
Your website files are on your hosting, not on the domain, but visitors cannot reach it until the domain works again.
